The inspiration for my next book is…. Dracula!
Thank you to everyone who entered the competition – there were some very interesting entries!
Lots of people plumped for Wilkie Collins’ Woman in White, though having done so much of that in Tom-All-Alone’s/The Solitary House I felt I couldn’t tread that territory again. Collins came up again in the shape of The Moonstone and Armadale, and other popular guesses included Jane Eyre, Far From the Madding Crowd, and Wuthering Heights, or perhaps a Sherlock Holmes story. Some people also went for Middlemarch, Vanity Fair, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Is He Popenjoy? (I loved that guess!).
Dickens featured with Oliver Twist, Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend, and Austen with Persuasion and Northanger Abbey – but much as I love both authors, I suspect my days of working with them are over, at least for the time being! And there was a distinctly Gothic feel to guesses like The Picture of Dorian Grey, The Turn of the Screw, and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
And that Gothic theme was certainly along the right lines, because my next book is inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula.
It’s called The Pierced Heart and will be out next year.
Three people guessed it right – Jacqueline Pye (@JacquelinePye), Deborah Penot (@dlv68), and my writer friend Essie Fox (@EssieFox). Do get in touch to choose which of the three books you would like to have. And congratulations!
